Jenny Bowen

I am a painter who loves to stitch. There are parallels and overlaps. I seek composition and tonal dynamism in constant overlaying and cutting back of coloured fabrics. Machine and hand stitches equate to pencil lines and brush marks. They perform functions – describe detail, create atmosphere and conjure mood. My subjects and inspiration may vary – landscape, natural world, still life, historical, archaeological. I have enjoyed producing site-specific work for different venues, e g. Montacute, Uffculme Mill, Eden Project, Slimbridge and Radstock.

I always enjoy new challenges.

The 3-D pieces I have produced more recently are always something of an adventure, interpreting a germ of an idea,. As seen in works displayed in Exhibitions ‘Flight’,’ Glove Affair’, ‘Coming of Age’ and ’Suspension’, I enjoy pushing the chosen medium to the limit. I employ materials not usually associated with conventional textiles. But I strive to keep some essential stitch elements, whether in construction or as pure decoration.
